Are you passionate about DevOps and an expert in cloud infrastructure such as Google Cloud/AWS/Azure, resources optimization and repeatable terraform deployment? Do you have experience working with cloud native services operations like Container Management, Kubernetes, Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment and Helm?
The University of Cambridge’s Information Services is looking for a DevOps engineer to help them deliver a large scale cloud native transformation. You will join a team of 18 people working on building new cloud native services and modernising legacy applications.
These services, of which some are public facing, are mainly used by university staff and students (~60,000 people). Thus, your work will have a significant impact on the reputation of one of the world’s leading universities. These services use modern web architecture standards with APIs and are continuously built and tested using Continuous Integration tools. They run on Docker containers and get deployed to a Kubernetes cluster in Google Cloud infrastructure.
The team has a strong learning mindset, which has allowed them to test and use many different technologies.
Theyare now in the process of consolidating their learnings and have produced boilerplates for the technology stack we have chosen: Terraform, Ansible, Python, Django, React, and Typescript. The team has a DevOps culture and uses Scrum for its day to day work, and they have adopted an “open by default” approach to new work and so you can find much of their work to date at https://gitlab.developers.cam.ac.uk/uis/devops
Although most of the services that the DevOps Division maintains are already cloud native and deployed to the cloud using Terraform, they want someone in the field to help them:
(a) Introduce better deployment and operations standards for cloud native services using Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment with tools like Terraform, Ansible and others.
(b) Mentor, train, manage, and be responsible for the career progression of more junior DevOps engineers, helping them grow in the organisation.
(c) Join a team of principal/senior engineers in other areas of expertise (Backend, FrontEnd, API, Security, etc), sharing the common goal of helping to transform the University of Cambridge’s Information Services into a modern digital organisation delivering cloud native services.
You will have a high influence on the direction of travel and the strategy. You will be a key part of this big transformation.
They want to attract the best people to the University Information Services. As well as a competitive salary and pension, they offer outstanding development opportunities and a flexible, family-friendly working environment. You will also be part of the unique community that makes the University of Cambridge so special.
